Nether spirits dwell
In shadows and dark places
Hidden from the sun
Alongside black spiders and scorpions
And all manner of crawling creature
Such nether spirits
Dance in the light of the moon
And the fuller the moon
The more they dance
For moonlight is to nether spirits
As sunlight is to plants and animals
They drink and bathe in moonshine and morning dew
And with twilight advancing, retreating, in endless repetition
Advance and retreat upon the world
And invade our dreams and haunt the darker recesses of our abodes
They speak to us in various ways, through the wind, and the creaking of boards,
The tinkling of chimes, the dripping of faucets, and humming of refrigerators and highwires
The sighing of boughs in trees, even in the chanting of birds and the buzzing of bees.
