My pretty pets

Wanting only to love

And to be loved

Wanting only to play

And to be comfortable

Complacently you merely exist

Within a divine ream

I cannot know

How I envy your peace

Within that natural space

And yet you shall pass away

Long before I do

And in your place

Some other dear creature

Will probably lie

You who keep me

In touch with nature

I love you without cause

And accept you completely

Without condition

I know how soon

You shall pass away

And how lonely I shall then be

And love you that much more

For your fleeting impermanence
