Sunflower Seeds
We crack our seeds
While we wait
Salty they are to our chapped lips
And the shells we cast
Into a growing pile
To burn outside
We sit and crack our seeds
And wait for the next bit of news
The most recent visitation
Hoping for some respite
Avoiding more disturbance
And the hunger of our minds
Pales only to our starving belly's
When meat is scarce
The sunflower seeds
And the piles of shells
Are vital resources
To share and share alike
Empty bellies
Make for weak yearning hearts
