I invited the mysterious family next door

Who occupied nocturnally the empty room beside our bedroom

To come to dinner one night

I left out two boxes of rat bait on the floor

The next day, returning from class

I found the bits and pieces of the chewed up boxes

And only a bit of dust where the pellets had been.

Wafarin is a wonderful device

That prevents the blood from carrying oxygen

And resulting in slow asphyxiation

But only after the Rat family

Had carried it back to their nest

And shared it with all their kith and kin

I felt little remorse about my act

As after that, I did not find as many rats

Crawling all around our place
