Constants in an Ever Changing Sea

From day to day, things slowly change

And we wander lost in anonymity

Upon a sea of crowded humanity

Old buildings are torn down

And new buildings are slowly raised, brick by brick

New fences are put in to block our ways

And new paths form among the cracks

While we cannot know the decisions

Of those who play god with the people's lives

But there are constants that guide us along our way

Things always there, unchanging

The sun shines on its daily schedule

The moon at night waxes and wanes

The winds continue to blow through the trees

The centipedes and rats continue to haunt our home

The restaurateurs continue to cook

And half-clean their food

The market continues to sell its wares

Of pork, beef, eggs, chickens

Bean curd, rough spices and sundry vegetables

And more innocent young students

Keep coming through the gates of heaven

Eager for knowledge and a full rich life

To find only the disappointment

Of the People's crowded halls of hell
