Little Red Yellow Bundles of Spun Love

Red yellow bundles of spun love

With slits at the bottom

Wrapped in the smelly warmth

Of dirty knitted garments

Like a woven womb

Mother's fingers

And Grandmother's fingers

Deftly marking out the seconds

Their knitting needles

Clicking, clicking, clicking

Whiling away the moments

In little rounds returning

Near the fugitive warmth of small coal stoves

To keep their babies safe from harm

To drive away the incessant damp and cold

And the evil spirits lurking about the land

The inevitable, inescapable winter is approaching

Fast upon the heels of fall

Another seasonal round

A change in Heaven's State

In the offing

Yet another passing

In the rectification of names

Another generation born of the earth

Mother's and Grandmother's fingers

Deftly knitting with their needles

Marking out the seconds

In small returning circles

Keeping their children safe from harm

Keeping their babies warm

Yet another millennium in passing

One more of a thousand generations

Of spun red yellow love

Their knitting needles clicking, clicking, clicking
