Editing can make or break a book in whatever market that book targets. Editing is an essential function of publishing, but not of writing per se. A good writer needs increasingly to be one's own editor as well, but it is always preferable to refer one's editing needs to a second party who has experience and a greater sense of objectivity about what one writes.
