Unfinished Business

In such a hurry

You missed all the flowers

That came so soon after

The house suddenly perfumed

In sweet scented profusion

Blossoms bright and beautiful

Lasting all that day

And all the next

Until week's end

Slowly wilting, fading

Flowers were always

One special joy of yours

And all those wild flowers

We planted out back

Toad flax, cosmos, poppies and sunflowers

They drank April's showers

And then put forth all of May's flowers

They missed you as well as we

All your loving attention

Why were you in such a rush?

After waiting around so long

I still do not understand why

You couldn't last any longer

And about the place simply linger

With your earthbound aches and pains

Perhaps you were finally impatient

To be heaven sent

To find softer folds

And gentler fields

To lie your old bones down

Within angel's wings

Than what you had known before

I tried to close your eyes

At last

But your eyes refused

So softly still

Your unending gaze

Looked yet to far-off

 And distant places

"Unfinished business"

My missus murmured

Little leftover now remains

All your things carried off

Like so much carrion

Few remains

But melted candles,

Fallen, dried up, petals,

An urn of ashes,

Haunting daytime dreams,

 Fading in and out,

And bunch of mixed up

Bittersweet memories

Casting our life

In twilight shadow
