Sea Sense

The sea is made of us all

And we all come originally from the sea

Its strong, briny waters course

Heavily through our veins

And our blood surges forever

A deep current within its wake

The sea takes its measure

By the limits of the land

And she makes her mark

Deep within our mind

With a mighty, out-stretched hand

Wide-spread reaching

Upon each and every shore

And she leaves naught for posterity

But ghost-tales of sunken ships

And pirate dreams

Of buried treasure chests

Full of golden coins and jewels

In the blue white-caps of its sun-glint surf

Gulls and pelicans glide and dive hungrily

For fish that leap and fly

The sea has no other memory

Than that of old whale-paths

And ancient turtle routes

And knows no other boundary

But a ring of waves round the world

Crashing and withdrawing continuously

Upon the very edges of the earth

The seas wash over the world

With drowning, raging waves

And washes the weathered rocks

For an eternity

But within its mysterious dark depths

Where many odd creatures dwell

Strange and monstrous things survive and lurk

And wait  for prey forever patiently

The sea washes over me

In chilling froth and white foam

Seeking to capture and reclaim this body

With a mouthful of salt and sand

To wash away the bitter taste of land

The sea's breath is nothing but

A strong wind to lift the sails

And clouds that blow in the gales

The sea is as vast and limitless

And as deep as she can be

All the waters of the earth

Flow down to her

Seeking her source unendingly

And heaven's rains that fall

But a young sailor's lost tear-drops

And the dew hanging heavily

Upon its many island brows

The sea is not for love or to be loved

But always reclaims her own

She always takes back in due measure

As much as we have taken from her
