On Top

We have a lot on top to announce. In general it may be said we are notching up our act to develop greater web-play and general interest, as well as to better reflect in greater detail what is going on within the framework on a weekly basis. The development of the front-end meta-system is going smoothly and on schedule. It was an area long overdue. We refer anyone interested to the detailed announcement list below. It is indeed, for myself at least, the best of times and the worst.

I am the first to admit to myself that current political events in the world, from before the election forward, have played heavily upon my mind lately, and the questions of state and current affairs are not clearly or entirely separated now from concerns of systems and their possible development in that world. This has obviously influenced the topics and manner of my writing in the last few newsletters, and I must apologize for this. I can come to terms behaviorally with the issues involved, but it has been psychologically stressful to have to do so without voicing a sense of basic dissent, disagreement and criticism in how things in the world are unfolding, largely due to the self-serving shenanigans of a small group of individuals.

The first couple of years of the first Bush term, I had little regard or concern one way or another over presidential policies or its outcomes, the events of 9/11 notwithstanding. But increasingly, in the past couple of years, as I've watched his international strategy unfolding, and its consequences, and the duplicity with which he has promulgated his agendas, or had his henchmen do his dirty work for him, and as I've experienced personally the consequences of "No Child Left Behind" and the chronically higher prices of gas at the pumps, I've come to recognize and realize how tremendously the Bush administration's policies and practices are impacting the entire world, and will continue to impact the world, even after his own administration is finally out of office. Just when one thinks it couldn't get any worse, it does seem to do just exactly that. Now I watch censorship of the media rising under a narrow moral umbrella, with the curtailments this implies for our basic freedoms, and the attendant rise in conformism, I begin seriously resenting the influence of a mono-syllabic good ol' boy upon everyone else's life. I see a failed national strategy that has left, in the final analysis, the US more vulnerable internationally than less, and in a greater state of debt as we waste lives and resources beating down poor peasants in a destitute third world country. He did not get to his office by achievement or natural ability, but by his connections and his money. Americans, in their faultless social logic, see this and surmise that the only way to get ahead is not by knowing things or accomplishing things, but by knowing and blowing the right kinds of people. This is the instant social pie making formula for a rise in collective conservative values vanities. Which only goes to show you that people can be counted on, on average, not to do what is right, but what is perceived as to their own best interests given the parameters of the situation they are in. And people can certainly spin on a dime.

It has been long known that the greatest obstacle to the development of a Meta-systems framework is human prejudice. Recent events, such as the US presidential election results, and other incidents in the world as well as in relation to our continuing efforts, I have concluded that the collective situation as it stands is essentially unworkable, though not hopelessly so. We all have prejudices--the prejudices Americans evince are no different in basic form from the kinds of prejudices found by different people everywhere. Why Americans seem so intent these days to project their prejudices upon others in the world, if seen from the standpoint of group dynamics and symbolic transactionalism, must only be accounted for on the basis of increasing demands of internal conformity and hierarchy in the US. The difference is whether or not we try to dump our prejudices upon other people or not and impose our own point of view upon the world as the "correct one." The only way to deal with human prejudice is by not dealing with it. Human prejudice can be defined functionally as the resistance to change or to new ways of thinking and seeing the world. It represents a closed worldview that permits no symbolic alternation. It is complex and has many variable factors--cultural constraints, social status-role identity, psychological and characteriological dimensions, and even heredity. As the saying goes, if you can't bring Mohammed to the Mountain, then you must bring the Mountain to Mohammed. This is precisely what the meta-systems framework must do. "Build it and they will come." What the narrow-minded, right-wing Evangelical born-a'gins and their terrorist Moslem counter-parts are not getting is the fact that the scientific genie is out of the bottle and won't get back in. Change is inevitable, and systems based integration will occur inexorably, in time, whether we fight it or otherwise. To enact regressive social policies, like the promotion of "Intelligent Design" in High School biology text books, some three quarters of a century after the Scope's Monkey Trial, and to deny the existence of Dinosaurs and evolution, is to commit an act of symbolic hypocrisy and denial that is fundamentally socially irresponsible, for knowledge creates responsibility and to have knowledge, and to refuse it, is simply, meta-ethically, wrong. This state of affairs, with an increasingly intolerant social framework in the US and administrative authoritarianism and social-structural discrimination on the rise, has affected our strategy and approach to our developmental efforts dramatically. The really wonderful thing about the long-term consequences of the Internet revolution, is that short of totalitarian China-like control systems, knowledge availability will put every one on an even playing field, and it will make it more difficult to those who profit unfairly from information control to do so or to act with a guiltless sense of impunity or immunity.

Our newsletter is differentiating into its third stage of growth. We have included new sections to our newsletter based upon the front-end and back-end framework. We have added sections reporting on developments and issues in each of the six main areas of the framework. This differentiation is now regarded as a logical and natural outcome of development of a systems-based framework. It is strongly hoped that the time to sustain development of the Newsletter is on hand.

"Intelligent Design" and Developmental Differentiation

A system of any particular kind may be said to symbolically and functionally represent a general or particular solution to a certain kind of problem that exists in the world. From the standpoint of information theory, a systems provides a finite solution to what can be called an information bottleneck, or the explosion of informational possibilities in the occurrence of a system at any particular instance that is so complex that it becomes impossible to resolve, and the limited means by which this information can be simultaneously organized and handled in a semi-non-random manner. We may conclude that all natural or real systems represent certain specific kinds of solutions to certain kinds of problem sets, and that multiple alternative systems may represent alternative solutions to the same or similar problem sets. This is not to say that all alternative systems are equal to the solution, or that there might not be a single most-optimal or best system to a particular kind of system.

Furthermore, in the articulation of any kind of system, it is observable that there are in the complexities of the organization of such systems trade-offs between determinants or limiting factors, which may have an important influence in the developmental trajectories of such systems. For any given kind of problem set, there is a hypothetical range of alternative solutions that vary upon multiple dimensions, and there might be multiple optimal states that satisfy alternative configurations or instances of the same or similar kind of problem set.

This is of course a rationalistic human understanding of systems. Natural systems in and of themselves lack any sense of predetermined purpose or arbitrary design in their informational organization or transactional articulation. It is the fallacy of human rationalization that we project upon systems said to be "self-organizing" such a sense of purpose and predetermined order. The logic of relationships that occur in natural systems is not a priori formal, but functional and embedded in the relationships and interactions that occur in all systems. To call "Divine Will" a projection of the human imagination upon natural order is not to play down the near miraculous wonderment and sublime beauty inherent to the organizational patterning of natural systems at all levels. The fact that we may rationally and logically deduce that all energy transactions in the universe, when considered in terms of net inputs and net outputs, will always sum exactly to zero is itself an amazing aspect of the natural world. But the true amazement is the human capacity to be aware of these facets of natural ordering, and to make sense of them in terms that are relevant to ourselves in multiple ways. In my humble opinion then, "Intelligent Design," especially as this is used to suggest the idea of predetermination or intervention or original intention in the organization of nature, represents a common fallacy of pragmatic human logic, an extension of the fallacies of naturalization and reification, that confuses simply our capacity to apprehended in a rational and intelligent manner the organization of the patterning of nature, with the relational patterning implicit to nature itself.

Developmental differentiation is the process of natural change that accompanies the developmental trajectory of any system. Change is one of the most fundamental principles of reality. We can attempt to explain change from a purely physical standpoint in terms of energy transactions, but this form of systematic accounting, that always in the net equation balances to zero, is only one dimension of a larger problem that involves information and pattern organization. This change is inherent to any real system, and has its sources in the underdetermined nature of cause and effect relationships both internally to a system and externally between a system and its environment, either directly or indirectly. The inherent variability of systems and the interplay between internal and external factors permit the cross-system realization of its developmental paradigm among a range of alternative state-path trajectories, and which define such a system therefore as not just complex, but chaotically so.

The concept of developmental differentiation from the standpoint of general systems theory seems to stand diametrically opposed to the idea of equi-finality of systems development that leads to a common-type solution from a range of alternative starting points. The question of equi-finality of systems really is at the center of the problem of synergistic integration of systems and the notion of dynamic equilibrium and self-organizational stability that integrated systems achieve. Given an initial set of alternative starting variables, there exists only a limited number of possible solutions to the problem of systems integration between these variables that are capable of yielding a stable configuration exhibiting properties of synergism and dynamic equilibrium.

Developmental differentiation of a single system, from one state or stage of its state-path trajectory, to some alternative stage or state of its history, or of a single system into multiple alternative systems, refers to the idea of the simultaneous co-occurrence of multiple systems that are upon a basic level independent of one another in terms of their internal state configurations. Invariably it is observed in nature that systems interact with one another within a larger meta-systems context and that no system occurs in complete isolation or independence from the influence of other related systems.

Developmental differentiation describes therefore the process of continuous divergence from what can be relatively considered to be a common "proto-type" form, or a base-line type, into multiple alternative forms. For purely a-biotic physical systems, the pattern of differentiation seems to be based largely on random or chance factors that occur early on in the developmental sequence--determinants in early starting systems may come to play a strong role in subsequent "iterations" of the system that may in the long run result in the emergence of different kinds of systems.

Physical systems are not self-propagating or self reproducing as systems--they do not in themselves carry the information that leads to the replication of their design. They arise as a natural consequence of recurrent conditions that lead to expectable outcomes. Biological systems have solved the problem of self-replication of design as systems, containing the information necessary for their replication at the core of their basic structure. The natural concatenation of events that resulted in the emergence of biological systems were so complex and, statistically speaking, so unusual, that it is apparent that life seems relatively rare and sparsely distributed in the universe. Because they arose from and were based on non-self-replicating physical systems, the chances for their arising become relatively small and events that may interrupt this process could arise at almost any time in the process.

For biotic or living systems, the organization of systems and their state-path trajectory appear to be non-random, even if the basic mechanism for change in successive transmission of information remains randomizing and therefore essentially "blind" in its occurrence. The point of the non-random determination of the alternative state-path trajectories of biotic systems lies in part within their meta-biotic context of interaction with other living systems, and in the resulting selection regimes that follow from such interaction.

The basis for the non-random selection and developmental differentiation of living systems seems to me to be rooted in the challenges of such systems in achieving adaptive and reproductive survival. The model that has been developed and effectively deployed in computer simulations is that of the genetic algorithm. We may say that, based on what we know about systems development as optimal solutions to implicit problem sets, living systems tend, on average, towards selection to greater meta-biotic fitness. It has been found that very specific key features may critically effect the net-fitness of a species in a specific context, based upon a law of limiting factors, all other features being equal.

There is no telling beforehand what these key factors of evolutionary development for a species in any particular period of its taxon cycle may be--the greater number of known extinct species attests to the fact that in the long run individual species lose out in playing the game of life, but that the continuity of life overall has been preserved through its broad developmental differentiation into multiple kingdoms and multiple sub-forms. I will hypothesize that developmental differentiation occurs and results in the differentiation of species into multiple sub-forms, and in the rise of new species, because, all other things being, equal, the most optimal form for a given evolutionary problem set, will on average, have a non-random chance of winning the game of life over the less optimal solutions. This kind of functional explanation may be regarded by some as tautological--we only known successes on the basis of those that survive, but in theory at least, if we know enough about a given environmental context and the organisms involved in that context, we should be able to predict the key determining factors and the optimal solutions before they occur.

When we come to the consideration of human systems, we deal with culture and symbolic realities, and the attendant consequences of these in the world. We find that these consequences are often violent and destructive. We must understand therefore that willpower and determination that are a function of the capacity of humans to construct themselves in their world, and to manipulate the world in deliberate ways, are also fraught with problems of projection and ideological superstition. These may be truly called non-random systems, but they often tend to unintended consequences that are due in large measure to random circumstances and factors that are beyond anyone's capacity to control. So, what comes off as "Intelligent Design" from a human point of view, ends up being in the structure of the long run something far less than "Divinely Intelligent" and often, more often than not, downright misguided if not completely dangerous in its outcomes.

If we observe the natural spectrum of traditional human cultures and languages, we find a process of developmental divergence occurring in every instance. But this developmental divergence, though it has been analogically correlated with the speciation of biological populations, through the concept of gene-culture co-evolution, has been different in form and character because the transmission mechanisms of cultural, linguistic and technological information has been largely environmental and "horizontal" in its occurrence, with acculturation and trans-culturation occurring with trade and the exchange of cultural information. There has been nothing biological or genetic about this kind of exchange. People learn from their environment, explore their environment, and are capable of adjusting their behavior and their environment to suit their needs.

At each level of stratification in natural systems, we will find that developmental differentiation is a inherent outcome of the internal and extrinsic variability of complex systems that may lead to a paradigm of alternative possible outcomes. Some sets of outcomes are more likely than others, and some types of trajectories may be said to be more optimal than others--stable configurations of systems arise along optimal pathways because non-stable systems do not last as long and soon become replaced by other systems. Developmental differentiation may be said to be a complementary property of natural systems in an extrinsic sense, and are a function of the fact that the synergistic integration of systems is never closed, complete or completely determined.

Lewis Micropublishing

Lewis Micropublishing is now the front-end system for the Lewis Works Framework. This consists of the intentional development of a general application interface program in conjunction with the Microsoft Empower program, and the development of an increasingly integrated web-based interface, the primary URL of which will be:

  http://www.lewismicropublishing.com

We have been working on close to forty different modules for this framework and the work is proceeding rapidly. It is our hope to be able soon to do daily developmental updates to these modules on a routine-operational basis. Many of these modules will tie in as front-end windows for backend frameworks and subsystems as these become further developed.

The object of the Lewis Micropublishing interface is not just to become a user-friendly content-management system, but to become, through the developmental coordination of its various modules, a fully "integrated" on-line interface capable of interacting in complex and interesting ways with the user, while being able to provide to the user as comprehensive a range of informational and knowledge resources as possible.

Lewis Micropublishing has from the beginning been an alternative business name for Lewis Works. I have learned that the multiplication of names for business purposes is not good because it is confusing for people and results in a lost sense of credibility, legitimacy and hence, ultimately, reliability. At the same time, the multiplication of business names seems to have become a common phenomenon especially for web-based businesses, and this reflects the fact that e-commerce provides a much more flexible and potentially productive platform than was possible with traditional styled business frameworks. This issue was addressed briefly in last weeks Newsletter. It is my intention eventually, upon incorporation of this framework, to provide a single name for the overall framework, hopefully without the "Lewis" prefix needing to be attached. Repeated domain name searches have as yet been unsatisfactory in this regard.

Lewis Works

We have organized a project planning framework that allows integration and management of all areas and knowledge associated with this system from a single point by a single user. This permits near complete command control of information of a rather complex framework, and it provides potentially unlimited flexibility if we consider the possibility of allowing this control to be available at multiple points by multiple people. Then the problem would of course become the coordination and "control" of these people in relation to such a framework. This project framework sits on a computing system that is normally not connected to the Internet, mainly for security purposes as the rate of hacking incidents appears to be on the rise.

Our interest has therefore shifted away from a white-boarding and project planning framework to the question of creating and providing effective consulting resources that would obtain eventually marketability, targeting especially in high-echelon sectors where planning and design play the greatest part. There exist clear cut and successful precedents for such frameworks. My aim has been to install effective anthropological frameworks into a consulting system that would be inviting and interesting to potential customers. The challenge of anthropology in an applied and developmental sense has been to make its comparatively esoteric and academic bound knowledge generally available for real world problem solving. There are clear methodologies for doing so, though these methodologies are not widely understood and are therefore not well received across a spectrum of potential client communities. The only areas of exception to this have been in forensic anthropology on one hand, and in archaeological survey, on the other. Anthropologists have been deployed in other settings, for instance by development and aid agencies in under-developed contexts, but the results of these deployments have been mixed and inconsistent, in large measure due to the corruption often associated with these kinds of programs and the social inertia to change that is difficult to overcome.

The next step of this process would be to organize the implementation framework in a systematic manner in terms project development and associated operational frameworks. We have made in-roads in this area, at least from an initial conceptual and design point of view, but resources currently available to us are too narrow to fully articulate implementation frameworks in any but the most basic and rudimentary manner.

Meta-Culture

Concerns in this area have largely been placed upon the backburner pending the acquisition of a greater range of resources. Aside from commencement on several new manuscripts and the publication of Robidoux Chronicles, there has not been much activity in this area. We are currently gathering all our graphic resources within one single compendium, the electronic portal of which will be found upon our Galleries Module. Placing all graphic resources into basic classes and organizing these in a central file system allows us to access and utilize these resources with greater ease and efficiency, and this is seen as increasing our productivity in these areas and in the manipulation of graphic images. At the same time we have developed and acquired resources for the production of more graphics and for their manipulation and development.

If we are to consider our goals and objectives in this area, we will be publishing many more texts in the next few years and developing the appropriate marketing frameworks for these works. This newsletter represents one of these forums, as does the post-nuke portal at:

 http://www.lewismicropublishing.us

We would like as well to pursue and develop other publishing resources, including editing, copying, printing and binding tools. It is important to be able to perform these functions in an efficient, cost effective and customer effective manner.

In the longer range, we hope to move into audio-visual production and presentation technologies and as well to provide environmental design frameworks that would demonstrate what I refer to as principles of earthbound aesthetics. These kinds of projects have been done in a basic way, but to do so in a manner that would be profitable or productive in a larger context would require contexts currently beyond our means if not our scope.

Lewis-Micro

Most of our attention lately has been focused on development of our web-system and our associated computer-based resources. In these areas in the last month especially we have made fairly rapid advances, and are continuing to do so. There has been a convergence of efforts from various directions to common solution sets to central problems, primarily involving the organization of web-systems, the development of general user interfaces that are flexible and "intelligent" enough to handle a broad range of demands, particularly from a single "point" and simple enough from the user's standpoint to be readily comprehended and easily manipulated. We therefore are able, at least in principle if not yet in practice, an alternative form of artificial "Intelligent Design" that has a logical and meta-ethical foundation, rooted in the exercise of sound reason and objective science, and not a didactic or moral or religious ideological framework. I do not propose systems based orientations as "Intelligent Design" in any final or absolute sense, but only to acknowledge and bring attention to the common possibilities for becoming in the world that are shared equally by all human beings, regardless of their religious beliefs, moral preferences, or ethnocultural values.

People are not likely to soon replace their religious preferences and prejudices with the concept of "Grand Systems Design" and there would be a danger in doing so. Systems designs are secular and scientific--they are not intended in a religious manner, though we may even look at religion as a system of collective symbolic belief and behavior. They are not necessarily a way of life, but provide a sense of organization for a broad range of life-style possibilities. But at the same time, it is imperative that religious biases and dogmas not be allowed to continue to interfere with the realization of alternative systems design at whatever level we may need to bring these to bear.

Meta-Systems

We have recently advanced theoretical interests and ideas in the following areas:

Physical Meta-systems--I hypothesize a single quintessential form of energy-state, "quintergy," of which all known forms of physical energy are alternative derivatives that are tied to particular subatomic particle interactions and configurations, and that this quintessential form of energy-state may be explained on the basis of quarks and strings, and may be differentiated into "colors." We refer to this base state as an energy, though we are not clear as to its properties or its possible transformational or fundamental states. All four known energy fields are associated with the particularistic properties of particular subatomic particles in relatively bound states--light is associated with the captured state of the electron in orbit about the nucleus; gravity with the bound state of the nucleonic particle (i.e. the proton or alternative the neutron as a proton with a captured electron); weak energy with the neutrino/anti-neutrino in relation to its nucleonic identity; and the strong force in relation to the mesons that bind together nucleonic particles. Another way of looking at this puzzle is to see all forms of energy as extensible field modulations that arise as the consequence of the binding of energy into subatomic entities within a stable atomic configuration. This system is really the central feat of physical systems organization of the natural universe.

To explain the systematic accounting of gravitational energy in physical systems, particularly in relation to light and other forms of energy, I have hypothesized a common base form that is commutable, under varying conditions into alternative configurations. I have hypothesized further more a new and basic form of state of physical reality, that I have referred to as "spime" or the portmanteau of space-time, and I have hypothesized spime to consist of the complex organization of this quintessential form of energy. In other words, we do not normally experience hypothetical quintergy as a form of energy, but as a process or state of space-time modulation. Known forms of energy act in characteristic and highly, in fact exactly predictable ways upon the field structure of spime in their instantaneous propagation from a common source. Understanding the basic properties and systematic structure of spime as a basic form of physical system from which all other known states of physical systems are derivative would in this model be a fundamental objective of the physical sciences. It appears that spime occurs in more than four dimensions, which implies as well variability of the fourth dimension and of higher unknown dimensions. This multi-dimensional variability opens up the door to alternative universes, or rather, alternative states of a single total universe.

I have conjectured that quintergy and the spime field in which it normally exists as a base state, may itself be a composite rather than a self-consistent state, that may only be explainable in terms of states even more fundamental. I have invoked models of "nth particulates" and ultimately, of a "zeroth enterty" to develop theories of the systematic structure of spime.

Biological Meta-systems--the application of general systems principles determines that evolution may have been articulated in the main upon the level of inter-cellular competition and on the basis of inter-cellular ecology by which interactions determine the outcomes of cellular development. Whether we are referring to the impact of microbial disease organisms upon species and host organisms, or to the competition of cells within a single organism, or to the hypothetical conditions of competition of prokaryotic bacteria before the rise of multi-cellular eukaryote forms, we should not discount the tremendous impact that cellular interactions, as basic units of life, played in evolutionary selection and differentiation of species. Understanding "survival of the fittest" from an organismic standpoint for instance leaves the impression that the strongest lion would survive to take over a harem of lionesses and to pass on its genes to its offspring. This is the conventional model of natural selection that in general is held. This model certainly applies best to social creatures that appear relatively K-selected and, should I say it, near the optima of their adaptive fitness in a saturated ecosystem. When we look at the competition of life upon a cellular level, I believe a very different kind of r-type pattern occurs. Furthermore, the likelihood of a Lion or its cub succumbing to a bacterial infection of some kind may be greater than the likelihood of its being out-dominated by a competing cousin or becoming prey to some scavenger or predatory species. Human disease has claimed, overall, more lives in the natural history of humankind than all the wars and human violence put together. With traditional childhood mortality rates at 25 to 35 percent, from one quarter to a third of all born, and frequently even much higher, it stands to reason that the predominant selection regime was not warfare or social organization, but infection. Perhaps fitness is best conceived from the standpoint of resistance to disease infection, or the capacity to rebound from such infection.

If we are to understand the developmental differentiation, for instance, of the cellular tissues of an organism from its original form through its embryonic states to a mature form, we might conjecture that the complex scheduling and coordination of this complex process may be critically influenced by the interaction of cellular tissue structures and, ultimately of cells, in relation to one another, and to a form of genetic predetermination that controls this interaction and its outcomes in a non-destructive way.

Symbolic Linguistics--Just as the dissection of the frog will not explain the manner of living that a frog exhibits, the analysis of a sentence for its parts and their relationships will not reveal the meaning that will be psychologically and socially associated with that sentence. The sentence frame, in context to its place of articulation in a larger socio-cultural framework, constitutes a system of symbolic meaning that is based upon the organization of critical signs or signals. These signs and signals interact with one another in the context of the speech or linguistic event, to provide the basis for the cognitive transmission of meaning. A model of the cognitive transmission of meaning entails that the speaker as signal producer modulates a sound series or alternative a set of hand signals or other paralinguistic cues, which is received by an intended target, or the listener. Native speaker intuition, or what might be more accurately called Native listener intuition, allows the receiver of the transmission to accurately interpret the signal cues given in a reliable way, and to fill in any missing details or gaps that might occur in the mechanical modulation of the signal, by means of intuitive or logical inference based upon background knowledge. The native speaker/listener who is fluent in a given linguistic code is capable of apprehending the full import of the communication upon a symbolic level of understanding. The listener reconstructs the meaning in their "mind's eye."

Symbolic Cognition--Taking the cue from the central feature of symbolic linguistics, which is the duality of pattern and the synergistic construction of symbolic meaning from organized strings of linguistic signals, we have hypothesized as a systems based solution to the human mind-body dichotomy, or the proverbial ghost in the machine, and hypothesize that mind as we understand and experience this as the product of human synthesis of thought, feeling and sensory experience that arises in an emergent manner from the complex organization of the human brain and related nervous systems components. We may call the "mind" a symbolic resonance amplification mechanism that can effective blend signals and neurologically based concepts and images into a "dream replay" of experience. Our capacity to "fill in the gaps" in an automatic and intuitive manner, as if informational input is seamless and continuous, is the direct consequence of the synergism of the mind in action. Because this system of human cognition and neurological organization of the brain is super complex, it is inherently vulnerable to internal or external disturbances, and mental illness, in its varying forms, is an outcome of this kind of disturbance at the systems level. Aphasias that affect specific areas of the brain are known to impact fairly specific kinds of functions that are evinced in basic but specific behavioral or perceptual incapacities.

Development

Applied systems provides the general model of development for all kinds of systems no matter what kind. Promoting development on the basis of an applied systems framework seems like a reasonable general problem solving strategy with near universal applicability to different kinds of challenges that occur in the world. Of course, development is never unlimited development, and to pursue one form of development entails trade-offs in the potential realization of other forms of systems. Therefore priorities for development project undertakings must be strategically and tactically defined knowing that one is always working with finite and limited resources, and that problems to be solved always entail more resources than are available.

Organization of information and work goes to solve the problem of the information explosion. The problem of development is the problem therefore of moving from the said to the done, and the inherent challenges attendant to implementation of real working solutions on the ground. For development systems, the proof is always in the pudding.

Development is to be seen as a basic metaphor of applied systems. Alternative development presents in part solutions to other problems that were the result of previous development issues. Modern and conventional development undertakings, at national or international levels, have often been misplaced and misguided by western models or designs based upon capitalist market considerations--these have had mixed results and have often produced more inequities and contradictions than they have resolved. Poverty in a global context has been growing more rapidly than the wealth that the system produces.

Products & Services

Lewis Works strives to offer a genuinely comprehensive range of services and products for the global e-consumer in an informed, non-aggressive manner. It has taken us time to develop our resources into an integrated framework that will provide largely automated self-service to our members and other customers, bolstered by one-on-one account management and attention to personal details. But persistence & a great deal of patience is finally beginning to pay-off in terms of the emergence of a real web-system with an active presence on the Internet.

We act both as a reseller for other providers, and we also are increasing the product range that we actually own or buy ourselves wholesale and then resell. We also provide a range of peripheral options through associate/affiliate accounts.

We seek to be as honest and transparent in our dealings and relations with the world as possible, putting as a premium in our transactions building the values of trust and reliability.
