Lone-Earth
Lone-Earth is dedicated to the point of view of the earth as a lone biosphere in the midst of a vast and relatively empty, and mostly lifeless space. The biosphere is approximately coterminous and coextensive with the hydrosphere, and it covers a thin strata above and below the earth's surface, not more than 14-20 miles in total depth. Below it are several thousand miles of the lithosphere, mantle and core, and above it several hundred miles of increasingly diaphanous atmosphere. The biosphere is thin and fragile, and exists as a result of the interactions of the various cycles of the lithospheric plates, the oceans, the atmosphere and of earth's own traverse on its daily cycles through the solar system and Milky Way galaxy, of which we yet understand little. Biological cycles thus exist in the midst of and as a function of larger geophysical processes on earth, namely the rock cycle, hydrologic cycle, climate cycle and calendrical cycles of the earth. The earth is called the "Living Planet" and it is a planet that is always and dynamically evolving and transforming itself.
Human population growth and the on-going development of contemporary human civilization is beginning to rapidly influence and interfere with the functioning of the cycles of the earth in complex ways. Human growth and developmental activities are putting increasing environmental pressures upon the fragile biosphere in many ways that we do not yet well understand, neither in terms of causes nor ultimately consequences.
My aim has been to provide space on the Internet where there is some dialog, even one way, about the Earth and its past, present and future. We seek a view of the earth as a whole, and in its many different and wonderful parts. No matter where people may venture upon earth, natural vistas and viewpoints always present themselves that are sublime, beautiful and spectacular.
Lone Earth has been set up as a domain-specific operational subsystem of the Lewis Works framework. Its purpose is to foster, nurture and create an on-line web-based context for alternative development in the world, including human development and the development and rehabilitation of natural habitats and environments on earth.
