Putting Biology to Work

Earthfinger's primary framework is the study of biological systems from a holistic standpoint, or what I have termed a "meta-biotic" framework (my favorite hyphenated catch-word is "meta-everything.")  It is also about the development of applied meta-biotic systems both on earth, and beyond the earthbound framework, in a manner that situates the human actor as the central steward, care-taker and mediator of many relationships occuring within the living world. Biological engineering has come of age in the modern era of gene decoding and molecular design manipulation. The utilization and exploitation of non-human (as well as human) living systems has a long history closely tied to human evolutionary history and the development of human civilization. Domestication of other species and the cultural selection of healthy and fit specimens has been part and parcel of the human neolithic revolution which preceded the rise of state civilization.

Our relationship with nature has taken many forms and functions in our past. It remains the central articulatory problem of human systems today. We are now in the evolutionary driver's seat. The predominant form of selection driving speciation on earth today is directly or indirectly human or "cultural selection" processes, which include for want of a better term "deselection" or systematic extinction due to human activities that result in displacement and habitat loss of ecosystems and the life-forms found within them. We call the shots on the main directions life will unfold on earth.

I've had a deep and abiding interest in nature all of my life. This interest has found expression in a number of ways--through horticultural efforts, through interactions with the wilderness of many regions. It has been my personal desire to extend this level and range of interests in a number of ways, and to develop this set of interests in a healthy and constructive manner.
