Metabiotic Systems
There is no living system, whether an individual organism nor a population, that occurs outside of a fairly well defined meta-biotic context that usually includes both biotic and a-biotic factors. Living systems do not occur in isolation, but as a consequence of their complex adaptive-ecological relationships with their environment and with other forms of life especially. To search for new life forms in the Universe without also searching for evidence of such meta-biotic contexts is fruitless--life cannot evolve where there has been no development of metabiotic frameworks conducive to living systems of one kind or another, and probably, almost always, living systems of multiple forms.
