Alternative Anthropology was organized in late 1999 as a viable non-academic framework for conducting significant anthropological research and application in contemporary contexts, utilizing the holistic and comparative methodologies of anthropology as the basis for a human systems approach to alternative human development.  Since then the objective of Alternative Anthropology has remained the same--to provide an alternative framework for the practice and conduct of anthropological inquiry beyond the boundaries of Academia, in application to real-world contexts and problem-solving.

Anthropology is both a science and a humanity. As such, it comprehends a very broad spectrum of human knowledge and understanding. Anthropology as a comparative and holistic science deals with extremely complex and underdetermined human systems that have both biological and cultural patterns. Anthropology as a humanity seeks to define the human experience both subjectively and objectively from a valid cross-cultural standpoint.

Alternative Anthropology has been founded by Dr. Hugh M. Lewis for the more realistic scholarly pursuit of scientific, naturalistic and humanistic knowledge about the contemporary human condition within a cross-disciplinary and comprehensive framework. It has been instituted outside of the ideological framework of academic prejudices regarding anthropological inquiry and the status of anthropological knowledge in the world, especially as these scholastic dogmas intersect with socio-political policies of discrimination and double standards that have consistently served to hinder the advancement of genuine anthropological knowledge in the world and that has tended to undermine and devalue the credibility of the profession of anthropology as a science and a humanity. It has been initiated and formally organized for the purpose of designing and implementing viable applications of objective inter-disciplinary knowledge in the real world beyond conventional academic boundaries, and in order to help promote alternative human development in the world.
