Alternative Anthropology is concerned first with the comprehension of human reality within a systems framework. It is concerned secondly, but equally, with the realization of alternative human systems as a consequence of this comprehension and its application to real problem sets that beset humankind and that can be considered to be chronic and pandemic in proportion and occurrence.

This brings to bear the possibilities of human cultural and symbolic engineering and design of human systems that promote more equitable and productive arrangements for more people. One of the main missions of alternative anthropology is to systematically extend such comprehension beyond proverbial academic armchairs, and to achieve through realistic projects and ground-based programs some degree of positive change in the world.

At the core of all human issues and problems in the world is the individual human being, enmeshed in some kind of implicit and direct network of social relationships. Change that occurs in the world begins and ends with the individual within their normal ethnocultural context. Dramatic change can be disruptive and destructive of adaptive relations of the individual with their life-world environment. Symbolization and culturation that normally serves to mediate change and achieve stable equilibrium of adaptation can, with the onslaught of overwhelming change, destabilize and even permanently disable these systems of adaptation.
