Modeling & Heuristic Design
Our interest in modeling is to provide scale model facsimiles of full-sized construction along with experimental facilities that allow testing of model designs in various ways. The purpose of modeling and heuristic design is therefore two-fold--first to provide a framework allowing systematic exploration of problem sets and alternative design configurations, and secondly, provide a means for rapid and inexpensive development of new ideas and designs without the logistics, expenses and problems of full-scale production.
Any model is a heuristic device that allows us to test basic propositions about a given or alternative design configuration, usually on a reduced scale more easily manageable and manipulable than actual size, and under conditions more easily controlled and experimentally contrived than in natural settings. Heuristic design may be defined as a general learning strategy that invites encounter-empirical and functional "rule of thumb" approaches to problem solving, and can be utilized as a form of discovery and basis for the invention of new rules and new systems. Heuristic design is first and foremost a problem-solving strategy and a general methodology for original project development. The symbolic organization of our knowledge allows us, indeed mandates us, to play with models as a precursor to working with real systems. Any object indeed may serve as an analogical symbolic model to anything else, with only the requirement of human imagination.
